Clawfoot Tub Re-do

One of my husbands customers wants to re-finish her clawfoot tub she got from a couple in Flagstaff. I did some research and here are some posts I found. I would love to try this someday.

HOW TO REDO A CLAWFOOT TUB

Instructions

Things You’ll Need

  • Rotary sander
  • Grinding pad
  • Rag
  • Mineral spirits
  • Rust-inhibiting sealer
  • Paintbrush
  • Bathtub paint
  • Fine-grit sandpaper
  • Porcelain repair kit
  • Primer
  • Abrasive cleanser
  • Fine steel wool
  • Replacement faucets, handles and drain cover

    • 1

Remove rust and grime from the outside of the tub and the feet. Attach a grinding pad to a rotary sander and grind the surface until all the rust is loosened. Clean the surface with a rag dampened with mineral spirits.

    • 2

Paint the outside of the tub and the feet with a rust-inhibiting sealer. Allow it to dry thoroughly, then spray the outside of the tub and feet with three coats of tub paint in the color of your choice. Let each coat dry for 12 hours, sanding with fine-grit sandpaper in between coats.

    • 3

Clean the inside of the tub with an abrasive cleanser and fine steel wool to remove stains and grime. This will take some elbow grease, and may remove some of the porcelain’s finish, but you’re going to restore it anyway.

    • 4

Patch any chips or cracks on the inside of the tub with fillers from a porcelain tub repair kit. Follow the directions on the package to the letter for application, drying and sanding instructions.

    • 5

Paint the inside of the clawfoot tub with a coat of primer, applied with a paintbrush. Let the primer dry for 12 hours, then paint the inside surfaces with three coats of bathtub paint in the color of your choice. Allow 24 hours of drying time, sanding lightly with fine-grit sandpaper between coats.

    • 6

Install new faucets, handles and drain cover, and bring in a plumber to connect the clawfoot tub properly to the pipes in your bathroom.
